Middle-Age Changes

Our eyes have their best ability to focus distance to near, and back, at approximately age 7 or 8. By the time we reach age 40, somewhere between 35 and 45, we usually have trouble focusing, or maintaining focus, at near. This condition is called presbyopia and it is part of the normal aging of our eyes. Gradually near focusing becomes more difficult. You may also have headaches, and eye fatigue or strain.

Presbyopia cannot be prevented, but we can treat it. Depending on your lifestyle, you will have several options: reading glasses for close work, progressive or no-line bifocal glasses, or even bifocal contact lenses!

Senior Citizen and Eye Care

Annual vision and eye health examinations are an important part of health care for all of our patients. More vision and eye health problems occur as we age. Senior citizens are more in need of eye care than any other age group. However, seniors often do not get the eye care that is required.

Cataracts are a normal part of the aging process. Other eye diseases, such as glaucoma and macular degeneration, are sneak thieves of our vision. There is no associated pain, and the vision loss can be very gradual and when the disease is finally discovered, it maybe too late to treat or control the problems.

Diabetes and hypertension are examples of common systemic diseases that can cause loss of vision, and loss of independence. Preventative maintenance applies to your car; it also applies to your eyes. Call our office now to schedule a vision and eye health examination.
